So, I've got the "Extreme-I" package with Shaw Cable, which gives me:

Up to 10 Mbps download speed

Up to 1 Mbps upload speed

100 GB/month data transfer

10 personal email accounts

Includes PowerBoost™

So they just started offering powerboost (free with my package), which they say: PowerBoost™ is a great feature from Shaw that allows you a 5 to 20 second burst of downloading speed by temporarily increasing your available bandwidth.

Well, I was reading about whether or not it actually makes a difference. Then I read about a firefox plugin called DownThemAll, which among other things, can split your download into separate downloads, which apparently tricks your isp into getting them faster somehow.

So with my new powerboost and this fancy plugin, I can download, say, an HD movie from here at over 3 megabytes per second! At that rate, it downloaded the 20mb file in about 5 seconds!

Seems like a good deal, although I've never heard of an ISP limiting your monthly transfer like that. (At least mine doesn't, or I haven't noticed it)

alot of cable companies dont necessarily limit but rather monitor. for example, a friend of mine dl'ed mad sh*t in one month; cable company froze his account and thought b/c of so much badwidth he was running a server and wouldn't let him use cable for a week.

sounds like a good deal monster; but how much r u payin?

gj with double post sniper

Powerboost is a good feature, although it tends to make for network instability across your ISP's NOC, and 100 gb / month limit, meh, why pay for extra when they give such a limit. -_-

Burst speeds are nothing new for cable companies. That's a server-side feature that cable connections take advantage of........

IE: Monster downloads a 20 mb movie from his favorite male porn site and said site uploads at an INSANE amount for a few seconds. DOCSIS networks are designed to take advantage of this. The web site doesn't have the resources to upload shit at a sustained 50mbps. If it does, it throttles it back so more users can download the same sweet rimjob action without taking a performance hit.

Think of it as caching the Internets.

If I'm correct it actually takes more resources and effort for a DOCSIS network NOT to utilize burst speeds.

My cable bill is about $100 a month, includes full digital cable (no hd or premium stuff), Extreme - I internet (their words) that is mentioned above.

Like I said, I didn't pay extra for this, it's a new feature that's included in my package. And the 100GB cap.... they don't call you unless you get close to 200gb... not that I like caps or anything, but there are only 2 real competitors, Shaw's cable which is kick ass and Telus' ADSL which is sh*tty.

Regardless of the ISP, I love being able to download stuff at 3000kb per second!

You all should seriously look at that plugin, downthemall, regardless.

That's a pretty good deal, for being North America.

Don't mean to steal your thunder, but:
In Sweden you often get 10 mbit down / 10 mbit up, no dl/ul limit and full cable TV for $50/mo or less.
