Anyone know the best program for converting .avi files too mp4?

i'm an absolute idiot when it comes to stuff like this..

just want to put films onto my ipod touch :]

any help will be greatly appreciated.

VirtualDub can do everything, might have to dl a plugin or something, but should get the job done.

I use PS3 Video 9. Then again I only convert to use on my PS3 and PSP.
