for a workstation, the more cores you have the faster your actual JOB gets done (autocad, maya, lot of highend apps out there really do benefit from 6-12+ cores).

if you're a professional in the industry there is no reason why you don't buy a rig that has as many cores as your budget can handle.

+1 All the macs at RISD are running 12 cores on em for maya and cad.

Most games only make use of a max of 3 cores. 3 is sufficient, 4 is the best for the price. In games which don't multithread very well (use multiple cores) having fewer (2~4) at a higher clock speed will be better than having more cores (4+) at a lower clock.

the fact that you can buy an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T for under 180 on some sites, and then spent a little bit on a half decent cooler... 4ghz is a very easy target. 285 HT x 14x Multi = Hurdur 4000mhz with 2850 NB :P

Jesus that pc is a waste of time.. 10k? f*ck that i could buy a nice car for that. I spent a 5th of what that pc costs on mine.. also can you imagine the freakin energy bill for that f*cker? 4 480's? pff first mistake was nvidia, but 4 of them. I think that pc is for someone who feels the need to show off or has way too much money.

I think you guys are missing Doc's point. When the Mac Pro came out it was unparalleled in the market as far as price per performance as a pre-built machine. Of course you can always make one cheaper yourself. But in the pre-built workstation market the Mac Pro dominated Dell, HP and pretty much anything else when it was announced.

The machine was, and still is a beast.

In addition for many design and art firms who base their job on a software designed MacOS(yay nix!) it was a no brainer to go with a Mac Pro over a Dell Dual Xeon machine(which was the top dog for awhile).

As for the original 10k PC. I'm all for the best of the best, but within reason. Like the case for instance, paying that much for a "special edition" case when it offers no actual benefit in function is a little absurd. There are so many better other cases. Plus a 256gb SSD, I'd rather take 4-5 80gbs in RAID. Don't even get em started on 3x480 SLI hah. Then to top it off with a CoolIT Domino ALC?! WTF that is low end cheaper model of CoolIT's product line. There are air coolers coupled with silent fans that perform better. These people are just praying on the stupid people with lots of money who don't have time to do 2 seconds of research because you are getting nowhere near 10k worth of parts or labor.
