I know this is probably a noob ass question but i need to know.

Im ordered a Corsair 1 x 1GB RAM stick thing for my motherboard.

Currently i have 2 x 256MB mem sticks.(not Corsair)

I have 2 slots for the ram on my motherboard. I was wondering if i could take out one of the 256 sticks and put in the 1GB stick or if i had to take out both sticks in order to use my new 1GB stick. Im not sure if you can combine them like that or not. Help please.

Depends. What chipset do you have? If you've got Dual channel ram then you can't. You need either 2x 1gig RAM or 2x 256megs RAM.

Yet another reason why intel sucks. Can't identify their own chipsets, Just reboot you're pc It should be the first thing that pops up on screen, If not press f2 to enter bios cfg. You should be able to find it there... LOL

With 2 slots your motherboard should be able to hold 2gb worth of memory. You should be able to take out one of the 256mb and replace with the 1gb. If your computer starts acting funny (freezing up or running extremely slow) just take the other 256mb stick out and leave the 1gb stick. I have the same chipset as you. I have 4 slots on mine. In 2 of them i have 2 512mb Kingston memory sticks. In one of the others i have a 512mb ultra memory stick. I have one free. My computer works fine with two different brands. The only problem you might run into is the two different brands of memory. All you can do is try it and see what happens. You probably wont have any problems. Good luck.

Where did he mention a cpu that required dual channel ram? I have the same chipset as him and it supports dual and single channel. He has two memory slots, which has 512mb dual channel ram in them im guessing. Now because the chipset supports both he should be able to remove both of the 512 mbs and stick in one 1gb. Like i said i have the same chipset and i do not have any dual channel ram in my computer.

i got 2 ultra ram 512s and mine runs fine. i dont know what cpu i have because i bought it with a barebone. i lowered my pagefile to 512 max and min, but first i made it 0 and defraged that. just some tweeks you guys might wanna know. i just put my 512s into the slots in the computer i dont think theyre in the motherboard, but like i said i got a barebone and the mortherboard and power source were in it so i never looked at them. but the ram i bought seperate and just plugged them into the slots that were empty.

So you should be fine with with the single channel 1gb stick. And if the two 256mb sticks arent dual channel you may still be able to use one of them with the 1gb stick. You just have to try it and find out. Maybe they won't be incompatable. Anyways if they are you still will see a significant increase in speed. So enjoy.
