my college says theyre monitoring everyones computers for kiddy porn and downloading music. a lot of people download music and dont get introuble because on itunes i can view their music collection and they have thousands of songs. i know a few use limewire and a few use bittorrent. i dont know much about either, but whats a good music downloading program? i just want to dl music i dont care about movies or games. just music. i need something safe, fast, and something i wont get caught for. if someone could tell me about it and send me a link, that would be really helpful.

thanks,
derek

It all depends on what "monitoring" means.. if it means they check your harddrives etc. your'e screwed. If it is refering only to mp3 sites and other HTTP related stuff, then I'd say go for DC++, easily the best speeds and 'assortment'. That's where I get ALL my music.

i doubt they check 40,000 student's hardrives. i think they have a list of sites and maybe they check the firewalls to see where the spyware is coming from to see whos downloading. atleast thats what my suitemate said. he said you could dl 100 songs a day and they wouldnt know if no spywayre gets through. i dont know how they check our computers but im pretty sure they wouldnt check everyones hardrives.

The problem with DC++ is that some schools, like mine, know a lot about it and have configured the firewall to pretty much nullify it, though I haven't tried torrent yet...

Your school doesnt have the right to search you actual computer (hard drive). So that rules that out. The only way they can catch you is if they see that you are downloading a song by monitoring the lines. If that is the case, you could get caught at random. there is no way of hiding the fact that you are downloading a song through there lines besides the uploader changing the name and puting it in a zip. And not many uploaders are going to go through that hassle. It also could be a lie. They might just be trying to scare you into not downloading music with their internet access. All you can do is try it and find out. They will probably just give you a warning the first time. Just wait and see if anyone gets caught doing it and find out what they did to them.

i used Winmx which is safe, but got pretty slow over time. I then used bearshare which is fast as hell, but comes with spyware but i had to remove it cause of my norton anti virus going crazy on my computer. Now i use Limewire which can be slow because they dont have as wide of a selection as others. after writing this i realize how useless this post is

DC++ is still teh shiznit. As long as you are in passive mode there shouldn't be a problem with firewalls, routers etc..
All them other progs are loaded with spyware if you don't wanna pay. And if your OK with paying, hell just use I-Tunes which is legal! lol

Did you sign some kind of paper that says they are allowed to look on your computer? If not just download whatever you want and if they say anything just tell them you got it from itunes. Because they would have no way of figuring out how you got the music without looking on you computer. If they do look on you computer without you permission just sue the sh*t out of them.

no i didnt sign anything. they just said at orientation they would be monitoring the lines for underage porn and downloading music and movies. i know they cant look on our hardrives but they can see when something is beeing downloaded somehow i hear. some people say at my school they look for whos computer is putting all the spyware on the school's firewalls. some say if you download they wont catch you unless you dl like 100 songs a day. i dont see how ratio has anything to do with being invisible but whatever. anyways i tried limewire and i tried ares, limewire didnt do anything. for some reason no song had enough sources. but everyone else in my suite who has it uses limewire and it works fine. ares worked for a few songs. actually 8 songs i wanted actually downloaded. i think its nortons firewall that i have. because to get on limewire or ares i had to turn it off but before i downloaded i turned it on because i didnt want a bunch of spyware. kazaa f*cked up my old computer 4 years ago. anyways i uninstalled both. i just do the file sharing thing on the aim. get everyone elses music without them knowing. plus my roommate said he will dl me songs on his limewire but only a few a day cause he doesnt want to get caught. again i dont see how if they were watching whether you dl 1 or 45343 they would know. thanks guys anyways. i think my firewall is too strong but im not trying to dl anything without it on. :perk:

I personally think they are just trying to scare you. Just download the songs. If they say something then stop.

I would check to see if your school has a DC++ cliend set up. Also if u use iTunes and others do as well you can share music. If the music share is set up just download a java program called ourTunes and you can get it right from people on your network.
