Philosopy:

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.
-Friedrich Nietzche

Do not fear death so much, rather the inadequate life.
-Bertolt Brecht

If god did not exist, it would be necesary to invent him.
-Voltaire

---------

Movies:

Walter: You want a toe? I cant get you a toe, beleive me. There are ways, Dude. You dont wanna know about it, beleive me.
the Dude: Yeah, but Walter -
Walter: Hell, i can get you a toe by 3 o'clock this afternoon--with nail polish.
--The Big Lebowski

Hoot: When I get home people 'll ask me, "Hey Hoot, why do ya do it man? Why? Just some war junkie?" Ya know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is.
--Black Hawk Down
(^-- Everything hoot says in that movie is quote worthy)

So many good quotes from so many good movies...but i'll silence myself for now.

"This wise man observed that wealth is a tool of freedom. But the pursuit of wealth is the way to slavery." - Leto II in God Emperor of Dune

"Atrocity is recognized as such victim and perpetrator alike, by all who learn about it at whatever remove. Atrocity has no excuses, no mitigating argument. Atrocity never balances or rectifies the past. Atrocity merely arms for future for more atrocity. It is self-perpetuating upon itself-- a barbarous form of incest. Whoever commits atrocity also commits those future atrocities thus bred." -The Apocrypha of Muad'Dib

"Being fair requires agreement, predictable constancy and, above all else, loyalty upward and downward in the hierarchy. Leadership guided by such principles requires no outside controls. One does their duty because it was right. And one does not obey because that was predictably correct. One does it because the rightness was a thing of this moment." - Heretics of Dune (I forget who at the moment)

"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain." -The Bene Gesserit Littainy against Fear.

“Most believe that a satisfactory future requires a return to an idealized past, a past which never in fact existed.” - Leto II in God Emperor of Dune

if you can't tell by now, I'm a big Dune nut and I find that they have VERY profound and great quotes. I can give pages of more lol

and then this

“To have a truly equal society one must have an inhumane government. To have a humane government one must accept inequality.” - myself

Here's a pretty long one, but it's fucking good.

"Easter Island.
At some point somebody cut down the last tree on the island. What on Earth did the other islanders say as he was cutting down the last tree? You would think that he would have known how utterly stupid it was to destroy the basis of their livelihood, to destroy the last tree whose wood they needed to make canoes.

My students and I at the University of California have guessed with me what he would have said as he cut that last tree down.
Perhaps he would have said: "We care about jobs, not about trees. Do you want to put us loggers out of business?"
Or perhaps he said: "Never fear, technology will solve our problems by discovering a substitute for wood!"
Or in the United States, that person might have said: "This tree is my property, and I can do with it whatever I want and keep the big government off my back!

...The metaphor is just so obvious. Easter Island. Isolated in the middle of the South Pacific. When the Islanders got in trouble and had wrecked their Island, there was no place to flee and nobody to summon for help. Similarly, if we wreck the planet Earth, isolated in the middle of space, there is no other planet or galaxy from which we can summon help and there is no planet or galaxy to which we can flee. So the metaphor of Easter Island may reflect a collapse in global society."

- Dr. Jared Diamond, University of California.

Heres another great one from another great movie.
Tyler, thats for you :9:

"We do not ask for your poor, or your hungry. We do not want your tired and sick. It is your corrupt we claim. It is your evil that will be sought by us. With every breath, we shall hunt them down. Each day we will spill their blood, 'til it rains down from the skies. Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. These are not polite suggestions, these are codes of behavior, and those of you that ignore them will pay the dearest cost. There are varying degrees of evil. We urge you lesser forms of filth, not to push the bounds and cross over, in to true corruption, into our domain. For if you do, one day you will look behind you and you will see we three, and on that day you will reap it. And we will send you to whatever god you wish."

~ Boondock Saints

Just thought I'd add:

"THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT!"

"What if it was just one guy with six guns?"

There's a hole in the world like a great black pit
That is filled with people who are filled with shit
And the vermin of the world inhabit it
Oh... There's no place like London!

~Sweeny Todd

I laughed my ass off, but sadly it was one of the only good things in the movie.

How about anything in Full Metal Jacket?

Gunny:
(to Private Pyle) -
Did your parents have any children that LIVED?
-
You're so ugly, you can be a modern art masterpiece!
(to Cowboy)-
"How tall are you private?"
"5-foot 10, sir."
"5'10'? I didn't know they stacked sh*t that high!
-
"Where ya from private?"
"Texas, sir."
"Texas?! Only Steers and Queers come from Texas, and you don't like much of a steer to me so I guess that about narrows it down.
-
Private Joker: (While Gunny is walking around eyeing the troupe) Are you John Wayne? Is this me?
Gunny: What? Who the f*ck said that? Who's the mother f*ucking twinkle-toed ock-sucking communist son of a b*tch said that?!

Ahh, what a great movie that was.

"My great-grandfather was once bitten by a rattlesnake. After three days of intense pain, the snake died." - Riker, from Star Trek

Battlestar Galactica has had some nice ones, funny and serious.

"The Cylon War is long over, yet we must not forget the reasons why so many sacrificed so much in the cause of freedom. The cost of wearing the uniform can be high ... [after looking at crowd] but sometimes it's too high.
You know, when we fought the Cylons, we did it to save ourselves from extinction. But we never answered the question, why? Why are we as a people worth saving? We still commit murder because of greed, spite, jealousy. And we still visit all of our sins upon our children. We refuse to accept the responsibility for anything that we've done. Like we did with the Cylons. We decided to play God, create life. When that life turned against us, we comforted ourselves in the knowledge that it really wasn't our fault, not really. You cannot play God then wash your hands of the things that you've created. Sooner or later, the day comes when you can't hide from the things that you've done anymore. " - William Adama [Commander @ the time]
