kidcapri stop being a tool. You don't know what the f*ck you're talking about.

Nova is right, routerlogin.com is owned by netgear, it's a domain name, not a local ip address. Their whois information is:

Domain Name: ROUTERLOGIN.COM
Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: PARK17.SECURESERVER.NET
Name Server: PARK18.SECURESERVER.NET
Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 06-dec-2005
Creation Date: 22-jan-2004
Expiration Date: 22-jan-2014

As gaara would say: PWNED

you can probably configure your router to give the login depending on what you tell it to do.. kidcapri just probably has it configured so that he can type in routerlogin... but im just saying that it's 192.168.1.1 by default...

you know its funny, how do you go to that site or type in that ip to get internet working if it isnt working? hmmmmmmmm? yeah both owned! the primary computer will be fine bc of the cd and the modem. but the others i just had to do connection wisord setup to detect the wireless after a few restarts. so the way i did it i guess was more along the lines of windows detection. anyways one more computer to go....

A local IP isn't on the internet..... The router has a webserver running on it, just for your lan...

well i got everything fine on the desktop with ethernet and the laptop with wireless. took a little work on the lap top to find it. but her dad doesnt have his lap top yet. so my question is, it should detect it first, but if wireless or any internet has never been used before, will i be doing that step process you typed monster?

my other question is, when i did the network wisard for the lap top, at the end it said to make a netgear disk or something or skip if its the only computer in the network. even tho it isnt, i skipped it. will his lap top need that disk i didnt make? i dont see why it needs that crap. it should be able to find the wireless one no problem right and just set that as the auto priority 1.

im just thinking ahead of time so whenever he does get his laptop i look like i know what im doing for the gf's dad. they take me out to eat and stuff so i like to help them move in with this kind of stuff.

I do realise that routerlogin.com is registered to netgear. I used a netgear router then switched to linksys then back to netgear. While I had my linksys router, I could still get to it by using routerlogin.com. When I used routerlogin.com with the linksys router I was connected to the internet. The router was not sending out a wireless signal, so I typed in that address. It worked and I proceeded to configure the router. Don't ask me how, I was just able to do so. This was about 3 weeks ago.

So please refrain from calling me a tool when I have experienced this with my own router. I am not a noob either, 192.168.1.1 is the common way of getting to router setup. I have set up about 20 different wireless and wired networks for myself and others.

As of right now linksys routers are peices of sh*t, so I would not suggest one anyways.

Access the Routers Configuration Manager by URL

To access the Configuration Manager, you no longer need to type the routers IP address into the browser.

Two URLs -- www.routerlogin.com and www.routerlogin.net -- have been added to the DNS proxy software, and will connect the user to the Configuration Manager.

The netgear router adds a DNS setting to redirect those domain names to your router's ip, no matter which router is on that IP. The point is that www.routerlogin.com & www.routerlogin.net are not universal sites for all routers, only netgear routers.

Monster you are correct. I am not telling you that you are wrong. I had this happen to me before. I'm only saying that with me it worked. Plus I already helped derek through pm. So there really is no reason for either of us to be posting here.

Once again, you are correct.

ok so its late so nothing i can do now, but my gf said that her internet is f*cking up a lot wireless. says its not connected a lot, and sometimes does connect but gets a low bar. and stuff like that. what did i do wrong, bc theres no way its the router right? i mean i have the same one except mine isnt wireless. is there anything i can do to change settings or something to fix this?

i guess i can start off and tell you how i installed it, maybe thatll find that problem. i first installed the cd on the main computer with wired connection and made a password and such. then everything was perfect. then on her lap top i found the connection and used netword wizard, i didnt create a disk like it asked. i never had to insert a password or anything. all i did was network wizard, then i found the netwrok linksys and connected and set that as auto and priority 1 in settings. and it worked fine yesterday when i did it, but when i got back from work she says its been kicking her on and off, sometimes slow, but most of hte time not connected.

and right clicking and clicking repair doesnt do anything bc it wont connect to it.

any solutions? thanks.

1. Plug the router into the power socket
2. Plug the cable modem ethernet cable into the "WAN" port on the router.
3. Plug an ethernet cable into a wired port on router, then to desktop PC
4. Depending on manufacturer (read manual), go to "192.168.0.1" (or something like that) in web browser.
5. Enable wireless, other options (ip ranges, etc), and security settings (WAP is not great, but it works for most people, if you really want to have a secure wireless network then you must filter mac addresses)
6. Set network settings for each pc to get dynamic IP from DNS 192.168.0.1 (or ip of your router)
It is VERY rare (impossible?) to find a wireless router that doesn't have at least 1 (usually 4 or more) wired ports.

do you think the connection problems could be caused bc i never did this? i assumed this would be default

Probably interference from a phone or some other wireless device... maybe her neighbors have something that is interfering with it.. if it connects but has a weak signal and is kicking off.. probably interference and has nothing to do with your setting up.. don't quote me on that though, i never set up a wireless network, but i know some things about them...

Connection problems can be alot of things (as nova said).

You can pick different broadcast channels, as per your router's setup.

Try that.

also if you didn't set up any security like WEP, WAP, etc then change your network name other than "linksys". you might be using someone else's connection in the area. every linksys router has "linksys" as default network name.

First of all linksys has different versions of the same routers. You probably bought version 5 or 6. Look on the bottom of the router and it will tell you which version it is. If it is a version 5, take it back to the store because there is nothing you can really do to fix it. Its just a piece of sh*t. Version 6 is kind of new, but I suspect that they didn't fix the disconnecting problem. I had a version 5 and it would stay on for about an hour and then just stop broadcasting the wireless connection. I would then have to reset the network to get it to work for another hour and then stop again. You don't want that bullsh*t man. Go buy a netgear or a d-link. I personally have a netgear and it hasn't lost a connection since I first hooked it up, which was about 3 weeks ago.

to be honest i hate trying to describe such things over a forum :)
instead i will post a web page explains it probably better than i can.
http://www.jiwire.co...p-usability.htm

your router setup page is as mentioned above http://192.168.1.1

your default username/password must be admin/admin . don't forget to change them too.
