AMD or Intel?

So here is my question, I was planning to go AMD, but the Core 2 Duo seems impressive, some benchmarks i saw on it (E6600), it scored MUCH higher on Floating Point operation then an FX-62... so which is better? I dont want to spend more then $500 on the cpu alone, so i was looking at an E6600 or an AMD 5200+.... the FX-62 is like $600-$700, which is way too much for a processor imo...
I dont want any of the fan boy bs, i would like to know the truth, and preferably benchmark scores.. so thanks in advance!

The E6600 (2.4) C2D is only like $310, the E6700 is like $510 which i dont know if i will be able to get... the AMD 5200+ is like $280.. so its pretty much between the E6600 or the 5200+.. I know for fact that the Core 2 Extreme (which is like $1000+) is the best proc out right now.. but i was wondering whether the E6600 or the 5200+ was better...Depending on your budget really, if your talking about 800+ then I'll have to agree with previous arguments and go C2D. If your on a more strict budget like 500 then I'd say go AMD. I've used both C2D's and of course AMD, the Conroes were quite amazing because they could pull insane FPS in many games but like I said, under a budget, you can get a 500 dollar AMD setup that will run your games 60-100 FPS fairly steady.

If you're willing to spend around 300 bucks on the cpu then i'd say e6600 all the way.
Benchmarks 1
Benchmarks 2
Benchmarks 3
yeah those are great.. thanks! yeah and in those.. the E6600 destroys the FX-62 in every single test.. so, awesome!E6600 destroys the 5200 in every way.

This is going to be a great flamefest.
And just for some proof, I have a 3.0ghz opteron with PC4000 Ram, and a 2.13ghz e6400 at stock with PC2 5400 RAM, and the e6400 beats it in most benchmarks. If you want benchmarks, just say which one you want.
If im not mistaken, the extra 2mb cache on the 6600 dosent help all that much. Maybe save some money and get a 6400? They all overclock about the same.
EDIT: the R600 should be out in a few weeks or so I believe. In the summer/fall they might even have a refresh of either video card, and also some cheaper or better core 2 duos.

With the PSU, you need to go with a good brand, not one that just looks cool. A couple months ago when I was looking for a high quality PSU for my rig, I went with the Fortron FX700-GLN. The Corsair is a modular PSU (unlike the one I just linked to). It looks like the 8800 GTX needs at least 30A on the 12v.
The output specs of the Corsair 620 are: +3.3@24A,+5V@30A,+12V1@18A,+12V2@18A,+12V3@18A,[email protected],+5VSB@3A
The output specs of the Fortron are: +3.3V@36A,+5V@30A,+12V1@15A,+12V2@15A,+12V3@15A,+12V4@15A,[email protected],+5VSB@2A
The Fortron does NOT have modular cables, but it does have better output.
I just did a search online for the power requirements of the 8800 GTX, so if it actually only needs 18A, the Corsair might be fine too.

As for PSUs, Corsair, OCZ, Seasonic, Enermax and PCP&C are all favs of mine. Lots of people like antec, but I've had multiple systems die from them so I'm a little weary. I've had 0 personal experience with Fortron, but once again poeple like them.
Also the 6600 OCs better than the 6400 on average. The extra cache doesn't really do much, but they are just better chips. :D
I'll be ordering my sh*t next week or so, and am desperately hoping that something changes in the market (aka prices drop)
