I digress, second wave black metal. Blah.

Edit:

Just saying, bands like Immortal, etc... are considered black metal. (be it "second wave" or otherwise.)

2nd edit:

I'm not trying to knock on anyone's deal, either. I just think it's gone down hill.

lol read the Historical Events part of that wiki. Fucking hilarious shit! The second wave of Black Metal is definately the more crazy one. And the only first wave band I like is Bathory, basically created it...

Mayhem controversy

In 1991, attention towards black metal increased when Mayhem's frontman Dead committed suicide by a shotgun blast to his head. His note simply read "Excuse all the blood". The ammunition was supplied by Varg Vikernes, who played bass for Mayhem on "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". Dead's body was discovered by fellow bandmate ystein Aarseth (also known as Euronymous), who, instead of calling the police, ran to a nearby convenience store and bought a disposable camera to photograph the corpse. The pictures were later stolen and one was used as the cover image for a bootleg Mayhem album (Dawn of the Black Hearts). Claims that Aarseth took pieces of Dead's brains and made a stew out of them eventually surfaced, as well as claims that the members of the band made a necklace from the bone fragments of their friend's skull. The former claim was later declared false by the band, although the latter turned out to be true

That's fucking hilarious and fucking abhorrent at the same time :>.<:

Make sure you post what you think of the current suggestions Shlonk, so we can guide further, we basically just scratched the surface

Got me Amon Amarth - With Oden on my side, Opeth - Most of their CDs, and Hypocrisy - Most of their albums

Granted I haven't really listeded to it all, but Hypocrisy seems pretty badass. Not the biggest fan of Opeth or Amon Amarth but I have to listen to more to give a better opinion.

A few of my favorites:

Hypocrisy - Osculum Obscenum - 03 - Osculum Obscenum
Hypocrisy - The Final Chapter - 03 - Dominion

I still have a lot more to listen to and to steal  Ill let you guys know

You guys might laugh at me but listen to track 1 and 5 on Kittie - Until The End (2004) Thats the kinda shit I'm looking for. Maybe a different genre of metal than you guys are thinking.

Well if you're into female vocailists, you should try these out:

Otep (fucking scary chick):
Arch Enemy (Wages of Sin or later):

none of them really sound like chicks though :P
Tell me what you think of the other stuff. It's good that you like Osculum Obscenum and The Final Chapter (Dominion is a kick-ass track, but my fav is Evil Invaders). That is some HEAVY shit.

I agree with Blooms on the following (as in you should check them out): The Haunted(<Hatesphere), Lamb of God, Mastodon (for real), Soilwork!! and Strapping Young Lad.

Oh, and as far as Opeth goes. I think you should start listening to Orchid(1995), Still Life(1999) and Ghost Reveries(2005), many of their other albums have jazz influences which take some getting used to,
