MICROSOFT HAS BEEN talking about DirectX 10 being an integral part of Vista, saying that DirectX 10 could not be implemented onto any other operating systems. The reason for this is the approach of DirectX 10 inside the Vista kernel, with a more console-style approach to hardware.

However, that was before the Alky Project came to light limelight.

A chap called Cody Brocious from San Diego, California, claims to have started to create an wrapper for Windows executables so that they can be ran on another operating system, with no prejudice about that operating system.

A year in, the Alky Project has gone live under the cover of a company Falling Leaf Systems. Members of its Sapling Program will be able to get the wrappers for DirectX10 applications and run them not just on DX10 hardware under Windows XP, but with some DX9 hardware as well.

Although this sounds like a fairytale, Cody claims he reverse-engineered the Geometry Shader code, and that users will be able to run Windows games intended on the Mac OS X on x86-based Macinteltoshes as well as Linux.

While we are waiting for the wrappers so that we can show DX10 running under Windows XP - or not - you can check out the claims yourself.

The gist of it all, DirectX 10 is no longer a vista-only product, bet those cocksuckers who spent 200+ on it are feeling hurt right now.

I called this months ago, and here it is, within the coming months, Expect DX10 for XP and Linux :)

are you serious? If so I'm going kill you.

Did you even read the entire bit about how even though there is DirectX10 hardware, DX9 highend cards can still run the majority of it? that means DX10 is a fuckin gimmick and that it will run better on XP anyway.

Can MS shut down the Alky Project? What kind of rights do they have to preventing DX10 from being made compatible with older OS's?

It's still gonna be a virtualization layer.... instead of running a VMware copy of vista on XP, you're just going to be running DX10 on whatever OS you want.

Want a truly cross platform API? OpenGL

This guy can reverse engineer all he wants, but it's not that different than Cedega....which just uses the DX9 API in linux... and I don't see huge legions of people rushing to use that.

and your point is what exactly? it still grants the ability to take full advantage of DX10 without vista, which is the biggest perk no matter how its done.

So wait, we can run DX10 programs on our XP's, or we can actually run DX itself?

We can run DX10 shit in XP. Just download the preview at the Alky blog, it has all the DX10 .dlls which are compatible with XP. For example, I downloaded those .dlls and the April 2007 DXSDK, and I can run DX10 demos on Windows XP on my Radeon x1800.

Isn't Bill Gates retiring, if so, you think the next head of Microsoft will be as much of a money hoarding bastard?

Actually, Bill Gates has very little to do with Microsoft, sure he does major type deals, but rarely even participates in it all, thats Steve Ballmer's job, and imo, Ballmer is running Microsoft into the ground.

Yea, I read that as well on the INQ last night. If your a big Linux guy like me it's really exiting, may be a disaster waiting to happen, may not, hope it's not. Who ever said that the Vista sales will drop is.......wrong. Every Dell, HP, and other sh*t boxes will be shipped out with Vista for years to come. But the gaming communities will defiantly stay away from Vista now......even more.
