Ya, chris, your first idea is the best here, I myself have an AMD 5600+ with an ASUS M2NE-Sli motherboard, and it works very well, i also have 2gb of memory. You may have seen my computer sprayed around Office before (its the red one) It is a solid machine that you can OC a little, i dont know how much, but ive put mine up to 3GHZ no problem even though its a 2.8 to start off with, to be honest you dont even need to overclock, its quick enough as it is. It will not support phenom CPU's and also will not support AMD 6400 Black edition (mabye after a bios update) And u really do not need more tham 2gb of memory with Windows XP, i dont know about vista, but it sucks anyway i dont really care... I have a 400watt Ultra PSU, ( i might get a new one anyway) but i feel that its more than enough, if you dont want to go SLI. Mabye pop on a 320 gb hdd on after and you will be set to party.

P.S ive had my computer several months and just blew the sh*tty onboard sound, so plan on picking up a new creative X-FI or something in the future..

Alright, the final build is this:

RAM
CPU
Motherboard
CPU Fan

Comes to around $300 including shipping, combos, etc...and it will be knocked down to about $260 with the rebate on that RAM.

Then, I'm going to overclock like a whore (since it's the 65nm nigger edition processor)

And of course I'll be using Arctic thermal compound.

Just ordered it, that cooler heatsink is ALL copper btw, I already have one so I just ordered another for this setup. They claim 2-day shipping but being it's late in the day and New Year's Eve is tomorrow, I'm betting it'll be here between the 2-4th of January. I finally get to join the dual-core club!

Well I meant the part at the bottom and such, but it cools fine. Reviewers with higher-end processors were able to overclock it far, I want to OC mine to 3.0/3.2GHz.

all copper doesn't necessarily mean great...whats important is that the copper pipes and bottom plate are put together with copper and not just soldered on, like the one you posted...however some soldered heat sinks perform fine...so hopefully yours does. Good luck and have fun with the new pc!!

Hm, according to Tom's Hardware, the processor I'm getting has similar benchmarks to the Core2s...in fact, these benchmarks shows that at 3.3GHz, it performs similarly to the E6550 stock, while much cheaper. Granted, the E6550 can overclock as well but it was more expensive. In some of the tests, the 5000+ beats the Core2s such as in the Photoshop test.
