Well, I have this tendency. This tendency is to think I know more than I do. Basically what happens is someone tells me how to do something and when I go to do it, I think their instructions won't work well and try to do it my way, thinking it will work out better. And time and time again, I'm fucking fucked over for it and I think "damn, why didn't I listen to the person who had the actual experience?"

Alright so I got my new PC parts a few moons ago and I was really happy, dual-core processor is sex and 2GB of RAM is as well. Plus the mb is blue and blue r0x.

Anyway, when I applied the thermal paste to my processor, I wasn't doin' it rite apparently. On my last PC, I did exactly what Arctic Silver told me to do: put a small dot of the paste in the middle of the processor, put on the fan/heatsink, and move it around a bit before fastening the heatsink. It worked out great.

This time around, I had the bright idea of actually moving around the thermal paste on the processor with a gloved finger (lol wut) and then putting the heatsink on. Of course, this failed immeasurably and I wound up with my processor chilling at a less-than-cool 50C.

The problem is this, as you can imagine, is that if it's idling at 50C, wtf is it going to reach when doing intensive things like games.

Well my PC kept shutting itself off when I played games, so I investigated by playing TF2 in windowed mode, opening up SpeedFan and ATI Tray Tools, and monitoring it. Over 100C in games. Surprised my shit wasn't seriously damaged.

So I gradually lost the ability to play my games without overheating. First it was EVE. Then it was CS:S. Then TF2 was the final straw. I took my mobo out, took off the fan/heatsink. The processor still had some thermal compound on it but there was barely any at all on the heatsink surface. So I used 91% isopropyl alcohol and Q-tips to remove the thermal compound off of both. Then I applied it the correct way (thought like an Asian and put an amount equivalent to an uncooked grain of rice on it and put the heatsink on, blah blah blah.

Before I did this, as stated before, my CPU was at 50C idling in Windows and the CPU fan was constantly spinning at 1800RPM+.

Now it chills at below 30C even when using Firefox/Winamp/Vent/etc...and the fan is only spinning at 500RPM.

So yeah moral of the story do things like they should fucking be done.

K so I'm gonna go play EVE now bai!

That's just puberty playing tricks on you. You'll get over it! :weee:

As for your comp issues, I'm glad you got it fixed.
