the extra 2 gigs of ram won't do anything for ya unless you run vista 64bit, and if you do run vista64...ummm...ya
but that video card is a great choice.
what do you mean by the 'ummmm... ya' about vista 64?

only 64 bit os (i.e. vista 64 or xp pro 64bit) can utilize all 4 gigs of memory, so after your gpu and a bunch of other sh*t you are prob only using 3 gigs of your 4 gigs max. you are better off with just 2 gigs of good ram, than 4 gigs of ok ram.

if your just speaking strictly about FPS, turn vsync off, tweak your config, and try again.

Vista is sucking the life out of your system as well.
I have an FX55 @ 2.9 ghz with a 8800GTS (G92) and get 13,500 in 3DMark.......
BTW and IMO 8800gt>3870 check the benchmarks....

Antec 900 Case I got it for $79.00
Antec 600 Watt PSU was free
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 $79.99
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz $203.00
G.SKILL 2GB PC2 6400 $42.00
SAPPHIRE HD3870 I already have
Seagate Barracuda 320Gigabyte Harddrive $69.00
LITE-ON Black 16X DVD-ROM 52X CD-R 32X CD-RW 52X CD-ROM $19.99
$492.98
On idle CPU is 25 degrees. GPU is 35. I'm pretty please with it so far. My fps are around 60 - 150 in TF2. Sometimes over 200 inside. Comapred to 15-50 on my old system. Pretty funny to me that my old 4200+ was holding back my card that much. I'll post 3dmark score when i'm done downloaing 93 updates from Microsoft... bleh..

I have to tell you though your original problems with the new 8800GT are wierd, your CPU was more then fast enough for source with that card. My 8800GT in my old Athlon 64 X2 3800+ sill kept me solid at over 100fps with everything cranked.
Glad to hear you got your rig in order tho
