They're ping pong balls (i.e. fairly easily crushable) and the metal mechanisms of the vending operation would likely damage/crush the balls if you were in too much of a hurry to get the ball and turned the action to fast, which would then cause you to curse violently in an intoxicated stupor and destroy the glass encasement damaging yourself and many-a-ball along with it however yielding several undamaged balls and an unhappy salesman...hence the warning...I really do hope you don't need a more in-depth description than that.
