This is why you verify you have a secure firing base before loading and firing your weapon :D
I'm pretty sure if it hit something close to the mortar emplacement it wouldn't have gone off. I think they have a timer that arms itself midair.
What probably did happen is that when that thing fell down, the backblast from the mortar might have pushed the tube in the opposite direction severely injuring anyone directly behind it.
