What I noticed was Nintendo seems to come up with most of the design changes that stick..
they went to the d-pad on the left buttons on the right design first - NES
Then they added the L1 and R1 buttons - SNES
Then added the d-pad and Joystick combo - N64
Now lets hope the Wii Mote design doesn't take over.

i agree seems the snes controller is pretty much the basis for the Xbox and PlayStation.... i really hated the butoon layout of the sega and don't like the gamecube either

The only thing I didnt like about the SNES controller was how it felt in your hand. Like, it was too thin and was easy to snap it felt like. I think Sony switched it up with the controller that fit in your hand perfectly. PS1 i think.
