Intel has been getting investigated by the EU courts since roughly 2000, for basically trying to fuck consumers and dominate the market by undercutting themselves to OEM vendors if they agree to not use AMD parts.

Here's some copy/paste from fudzilla

AMD has released a couple of new comments following the European Commission ruling against Intel, announced earlier today, which requires Intel to pay a record fine of €1.06 billion ($1.45bn).

AMD CEO and president Dirk Meyer says the ruling "is an important step toward establishing a truly competitive market," and says AMD is "looking forward to the move from a world in which Intel ruled, to one which is ruled by customers."

"After an exhaustive investigation, the EU came to one conclusion - Intel broke the law and consumers were hurt," said Tom McCoy, AMD executive vice president for legal affairs. "With this ruling, the industry will benefit from an end to Intel's monopoly-inflated pricing and European consumers will enjoy greater choice, value and innovation."

The European Commission found Intel guilty of abusing its dominant position in the x86 market, saying "Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years."

Intel was found guilty of similar practices in Korea last year, and in Japan in 2005. In the United States, Intel is under investigation by the FTC and New York Attorney General's office. AMD filed private litigation in the District Court of Delaware, which is scheduled for trial in spring 2010.

Hm, while Intel is shitty, I have to say that the EU is relatively overzealous in fining corporations. Take Microsoft. IE is shit and I would never use it by choice but the average consumer not only doesn't give a shit about this, but they probably would just pick IE from a choice of browsers if offered one. Besides, they wanna ream Microsoft for its success but I don't see them getting butthurt over the fact that OSX ONLY comes with Safari and Quicktime like Windows only comes with IE and WMP.

quit being a butthurt Microsoft fanboy Chris, this has nothing to do with them, and saying the EU is overzealous for actually investigating this for the past 9 years? I think not.

Dude, what they're doing is illegal. It doesn't make it overzealous just because the EU punish them and the US turn a blind eye.

The US DoJ did the same thing, it doesn't matter. People are idiots. I hate what Intel does too but in Microsoft's case, it's undeserving. The only reason the litigation regarding IE has gone so far is because the creator of Opera is butthurt nobody uses their shitty browser.

Seriously, how is MS only including IE/WMP any different from Apple only including Safari/QuickTime. I know that IE is a worse browser (well, in actual security, it isn't, but in applied security, it is), but it's essentially the same situation, Windows is just installed on more computers because for some strange reason Apple won't allow OSX to be sold by PC OEMs.

because its anti-consumer, that's why.

Mac has nothing to do with it, they don't control the majority market share, and its only due to most people being too lazy to grab an alternative.

Face it, if Microsoft has to comply, whats the worst that could happen? you get an option when you click *media player* which brings up an option of the top 5 with a button that says advanced which lets you browse through all of them to find what you like.

how is that bad?

It's anti-consumer in both cases, it's just that because OSX is such a shitty OS that few people use so they don't care about it, not now at least.

Also yes, an option to pick from several different programs. Is that a bad idea in any way? No. The issue is that 90% of people don't give a shit and the people who do give a shit know how to get alternatives.
