...uhhh....L4D has a versus mode...Surv. Vs. Infect....with people playing both sides. True the AI still controls the horde and the drops, but its generally fair...down to which team plays better as each.

That's bullshit, I can't remember how many versus matches I've played where our team never got a tank spawn while the other team got theirs. Or a witch spawned out the their way and right in front of the safe house door for us.

The game has too many elements of chance to be based on skill, just like with TF2's crit system (Though non-crit game play can be considered competitive.). One lucky roll of the dice and the games tide can be shifted. Anyone that thinks these games can be used for competitive game play are morons.

Sounds more like versus being slightly 'broken' then the game needing to be over-exalted as a failure for competitive gameplay. Personally never experienced a game where a team would get a tank while the next round there would be none...but in an obscure and rare enough event such as that, that presents such an unfair advantage, i would think a rematch would be no-problem. As for a witch...the idea of that causing a problem when everyone in a competitive match would/should know how to instantly crown her reduces me to guffaws. Then the AI director...its not like one team of surv. is going to get 5 hordes to another teams 1 or 2...in a particularly lucky situation, one team might have to deal with one more horde (likely b/c there too slow) as if its even a big f*ckin deal on normal; if anything another horde will hopefully purge the sh*tty players/teams from the tourney a little early. The fact that it isnt entirely 100% fair is accurate, but anyone joining it should take that into consideration and arguing that such a competitive game shouldnt be included in competitive tournaments due to this slight uniqueness is...

Crowning a witch with her back literally 1 ft from the safe house door while playing against any competent infected player can be a hang up.
But yes, your right, L4D can be competitive, just like some people find Yahtzee competitive.
