Ubisoft has revealed controversial new plans for anti-piracy measures on all its PC games. Taking a leaf from the Steam and EA playbook, the European publisher has announced that all of its games will require online activation via an Ubi.com account. The only trouble is, Ubi's gone a step further.

On one hand, the new DRM plans will let you install your Ubisoft games on as many computers as you like. You will also be able to run games without a disc, and even save them remotely on Ubisoft's servers. The catch is that Ubisoft will require you to always be online when you play your games, in order to keep the products verified.

While many PC gamers have a persistent Internet connection, a significant amount do not, and the lack of offline play will surely snub a few customers. The new measures are already generating a potential riot from the always-touchy PC gamer crowd who believe it's a stupid and presumptuous move to assume gamers are infinitely connected to the 'net.

What do you reckon? A bold and respectable move on the part of Ubisoft, or a misstep that will create a significant backlash? I'll give Ubisoft one thing -- the company's got some balls, even if it is lacking in the foresight department.

way to go Ubisoft, losing loyal customers and raging the masses all at the same time.

Oh we'll b*tch, moan and most likely create like stubs said, a way around it, but like most things they won't care and we won't do something drastic enough to make them think they can't keep snubbing us with impunity.

Even if they do "force" us to have a connection with their servers, there will be ways to get around this...

well of course there will be, but you fags forget that this hurts people who buy the games, not guys like me who will only download them, play for a bit then uninstall.

how many people do you know who play games and don't have an internet connection? doubt it'll really hurt people who buy games.

Well, thats just it...we dont consort with those kinds of people, but I'm sure there out there...and they're gonna be f*ckin pissed...
Besides, the idea that a monthly payment to a service determines whether or not i can play a video game that i actually payed for is the single reason why i have never gotten into f*ckin MMO's...

tbh I'm more surprised by the fact that Ubisoft hasn't learned from when they used Starforce that it actually hurt sales more then anything else, and while I do agree that a lot of people do have internet, that isn't even my main gripe with it, say for example your ISP goes down for a day due to a bad switch in a datacenter, you come home from work and figure fuck, if I can't browse the net I'm going to play singleplayer... oh you can't because the game needs you to be online.

that doesn't work for me.

That eventuality aside, imagine what happens when someone gets ridiculously pissed and goes Allah Akbar on their servers or god help us and they just f*cking go down for a day or two and you can't connect to identify?

I mean, there are a ton of what if's. The idea itself is hardly foolproof.

The scenario that Shadow posted is actually what happens a lot to me. My ISP is epic fails. It's why I barely play online these days. Sucks major balls. Oh well, I rarely get Ubisoft games for the PC lol.
