Christ....just went to the arena and got my ass kicked. Realized I'm missing what is important to purchase. And how in the hell do these guys get so much money?

I'm a warrior/elementalist. Ring mail armor and a sh*tty sword. Need more magic to ward off opposing spells. Well, I need everything!. Brain is fried and can't think of what to purchase and what not to pick up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
