I'm completely clueless. What are the pros and cons of thermal grease versus thermal pads between the heatsink and processor, and when would you use each?

Thermal pad= generic sh*t that comes with crappy HSFs. Thermal grease such as arctic silver is the way to go. SIlver is one of the best condustors of heat that there is. The purpose of this stuff or a thermal pad is to fill the tiny spaces inbetween your processor and the heatsink to improve cooling. Arctic silver is like $10 but gives you enough to do a sh*tload of processors as you only need the smallest amount. No need to glob it on, an amount equal to the size of a pinhead is more than enough. Smooth it out with a sharp razor and you are ready to go. Use the pad if your HSF already has one on there, but if you have an upgraded one then go with arctic silver.

Yeah i agree with shlonky on this one. Thermal pads are a waste of production. LOL. There's no need to use them unless you don't know what your doing when it comes to building your first computer. Thermal paste is always going to be better and offer lower temps. Just make sure you don' t put to much on or else you'll end up distroying the chip itself. I would suggest any on the Atric Silver Sh*t. Well let us know what you decide or if you have any ?'s. lata
