Depends what games you play man. Nvidia pwns ATI if you play OpenGL games, like Doom3.
However if you play DirectX games, like, well, every other f*cking game on the planet, then ATI pwns.
Go look at any hardware review for the X1800XT. It walks all over the 7800 GTX.... in DirectX games. Half Life 2(cs:s, dod:s, etc), F.E.A.R., are all DirectX games and all of them run way better on the x1800xt.
But, if you "get really pumped" playing Doom3, then go for the nvidia.

yeah, the reviews I read had the x1800 xt beating the 7800 gtx where res and settings were fairly low. But with all settings maxxed and high resolution, the 7800 gtx is actually about ~20% better than the x1800 xt. Also, the x1800xt card had 512mb ddr3, while the 7800 gtx had 256.

What kind of price range are you looking in? That really opens a variety of cards you can get. Each card has there own set price. If it doesn't really matter i would either go for the 7800gtx or the X1800 like everyone says. I first started off with a ATI 9600 all-in-wonder in my first computer. Now in my newest computer i have a 6800 GT which is old but it works. Once i start working again i'll think about upgrading the video card and getting 2 more Corsair 512mb chips to make the total 2gigs. But every since i bought that Nvidia card i have seemed to move over to the Nvidia side. All depends on what your looking to do.
