Ok alittle background, i live in a house with ~13 computers and 1 Road runner line. Most of the time they arent downloading anything, i have put a stop to most of the p2p crap, no one really uses Bit Torrent. I dont think certain people are grabbing all the bandwidth. I have gone through and installed kapersky and ran through all the scans. No one plays games besides me.

Now the problem, we are all having bandwidth issues, i have seen it as low as 22.6kbps, but average would be ~70kbps. Also it is cutting in and out alot. IE AIM will sign and off every couple mins as well as ventrillo. This makes it a pain in the ass to do any work on the web, dont even think about playing games.

Right now our set up is, modem into an 8 port linksys router, which has one line into a 16 port linksys switch, in which 8 computers are hooked up to, then another line runs from the switch to a hub. from this hub ~5 computers are hooked up.

Is it possible that this sh*t is messing up our bandwidth. I just reset the router and everything is still really messed up. Do you think more of a business class switch would help? buying a new router and a new business type switch, and hook up all the computers directly to the switch. what does everyone think?

here is the switch and router.

if you guys could give me some insight it would be greatly appreciated.

Well... What I could guess is that your router or switch is diving up the bandwidth per computer, I think you may want to contact linksys with this sort of issue, may take you a while to get in touch with them, but it should help you understand whats wrong with it, if that fails I would contact RoadRunner ISP you have...

hmmm.. the router is wireless.. maybe you bought something thats on the same frequency and its interfereing with the router or something.. i dont know... i have pretty much the same setup.. except my switch and cards are gigabit.. and only 3 computers.. but its all wired.. not wireless.. its just that my friend yestrday was telling me that he got a new phone and his wireless game adapter kept messing up, and now its totally messed up.. so maybe you have something thats on the same frequency as the router.. and if im totally wrong.. dont hurt me... i dont really know that much about wireless stuff... :?:

yes nova, but if you arnt using the wirless, then additional wireless equitpment wouldnt affect the router as a whole.

What shadow said is definitely a possibility. About the router dividing up the bandwidth. But the router just sits there until someone sends a request for information. Then divides up the bandwidth based on the how many requests have gone through. So if no one else is on you should be getting full bandwidth. But if some one else is using the internet then the router would split the bandwidth. It isn't that your equipment is old or too slow. Going with gigabit to access the internet is a waist of money. Being that its only going to operate at the rate of your internet connection. Those only come in handy when you are sending files back and forth within your network, when you would actually be able to use 1000 mbps. With all that said, its your line. You said that no one really uses p2p or bit torrent so you should definitely be getting more that 22kbps to 70kbps. Your best bet would be to call your isp.

I build computers for my kiosk company, and have not had much luck with hubs. Switches sometimes don't like to play together, and I just replaced a failed 16 port Linksys like you have. My first reaction to your post is to try disconnecting (if at all possible, given the nature of shared internet) the hub first, then the other switch to see if there is any noticable improvement.

You may want to double check your wireless settings, I have had to "fix" friends routers because the settings were hijacked (by AOL) and one guy had a neighbor enjoying his free internet connection(of course downloading porn).

One more thing, check all the cables and their connections. I spent a whole weekend on a network of 26 computers to find out one of my employees swapped a ethernet cable for a "generic" one she brought from home. She liked the color of the companies cable, and I found the homemade cable wired incorrectly.

On another front, you didn't mention if this was a recent condition. If you didn't have problems until a recent time, check what changes may have coincided with the slowdown. I know these suggestions may sound a bit elementary, but hey, the advice is free.

sounds like ur system is being overdriven. B/c u have a router into a switch into a hub, this can create numerous problems. one of the hardware items may be a bit defective. i know ive had a linksys router which did the same thing. i bought a new one and my problem was solved. you may want to reconfigure ur hardware in a matter that is more effieceint, ie hookup more computers to the router instead of a third hub. idk, sounds kinda crazy w/that many computers runnin on one connection. gl.
