Yeah well...its upgrade time.

current rig..

AMD athlon 64 3500+ w/ ZALMAN CNPS7000B-Cu hsf
Asus A8N-E Deluxe
Corsair XMS 2x512mb
XFX 6800gt 256mb w/ zalman VF700 hsf
Antec truepower 550watt
WDC serial ata 80Gb hdd

Just ordered...

eVGA 7950gt 512mb
Corsair XMS 2x512 (same exact kit i have now)
ZALMAN VF900 vga hfs
Hiper 580watt modular psu

Not sure if i shoudl order

Asus a8n32-sli mobo
and maybe a new cpu not sure about that either (maybe an x2)

should i spend the extra $$$ to get the new mobo and cpu or should i just keep what i have? I really dont want to go with the am2 seeing that i would have to ditch all my mem. and my current zalman for my cpu. Opinions? (and kids with the name Chris may not post to this topic)

I'm not sure but i think when you run 4-sticks of ram you have to use slower timings something to do with athlon 64 memory controler??I've heard allot of people speak of that..And i would either BUILD A INTEL or leave the mother board and buy a nice dual core opteron 939!!

voted no. no need for a new mobo w/the one you have unless ur switching sockets. if u have the money, a new cpu would be nice man.

and btw dude, the zalman vf900 is absolutely amazing. i have it on my 7800gt and makes a complete world a difference, you wont be disappointed with it

That mobo is great, shadow and I both have it.

Why do you want to upgrade though? your old one causing problems or what?

Why not an AM2?

EDIT: lol you already answered that.

If it aint broke, dont fix it. Unless your board is acting up, there shouldnt be any problems with it. You wont get any noticeable preformance changes with the new board. If you want, just get a Socket 939 X2 and drop it in there.

Get an opty 165 or 170 for cheaper and OC the hell out of it. I have my 165 at 3.0ghz, stock is 1.8ghz. You can easily get 2.6ghz out of it, most likley more. They are around the same price as the X2, have more cache and overclock like crazy.

qft
2.7 on my 165 and it's at 40C. :D
*edit* I actually haven't tried going higher.. just realized I stopped 'cause my video card was pissing me off and I got distracted...*end edit*
Drizz, what stepping do you have that got 3? Is that on water?

a 165 retails for ~150 (maybe even lower now) if you shop around. I got mine off of hardforum for 105 shipped.

Its a CCBBE 0610DPMW Watercooled, gets to around 45C load sometimes higher. its not 100% prime stable but its stable enough for me. I got it for around $250ish off of hardforums back when they were expensive, prob about a month later prices dropped.

I'm jealous (except for the price). Running an unfortunate CCBWE 0551WPMW here. I think I'm supposed to be lucky to get 2.7 on water.. :( I'm hoping pelt cooling will fix that at least a bit. Apparently I'm unlikely to get 3 without much effort

Right now is the best time to buy a new processor pretty much. With intel puting alot of pressure on amd, they are forced to lower the cost of there processors. So take advantage of this while you can.

Yeah its a sweet proc. SoB, even if you get a crappy stepping like the CCBWE's, they still get 2.6ghz easy, which right there is an opteron 180. Save yourself $150 and get a 165.
