With his christmas bonus, my brother wants to get rid of his ancient 2.0ghz p4 he got for college 4 years ago and go with something new. I put this together for him:

amd athlon x2 3800+
OCZ Gold 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
Rosewill RP550-2 ATX 2.01 550W Power Supply
SAPPHIRE Radeon X1900GT 256MB
MSI K9N Platinum Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-WW Black/Silver Aluminum Bezel

the only thing im not buyin is harddrives since he already has two from his old system, an 80 and a 160 and he doesnt need any more space since he's not dl'ing sh*tloads of movies or whatnot. total cost including shipping & tax: $678

Nice system. ZZF also gives really cheap 2 day shipping also, might be worth the extra few bucks.

Rosewill is a crapshoot. They rebrand everything so it's impossible to tell what you'll actually receive. It could be OK, or it could die in a day.. :(
Othewise it looks solid!

I'm going to have to disagree with both of you on this account because well first of... this motherboard is only a microatx. Ok yea you can fit your stuff on it but you won't have much space for expandability. Second of the motherboard only supports DDR1 (if you click on the link you can check that) DDR1 is really old technologie acctualy and you should upgrade the mobo to at least a minimum DDR2. Solely because the emory ports are faster and you can use the like 40 bucks you saved from ZZ to buy a better MOBO. Have fun and other then taht great build for the stuff he's planning on doing.

I am pretty sure the msi k9 platinum mobo he is getting is atx and also supports ddr2. He also has a link to the ddr2 memory he is purchasing. Do you have any idea wtf you are talking about man? What were you looking at that said micro atx and ddr1? Even if it was micro atx and with ddr1 memory, it wouldn't even be that big of a deal.

lol yeah.

i'm posting from his comp right now, the thing is an awesome upgrade from the old p4 2.0 he had, its blazing fast compared to it. its still not top of the line obviously but it wasnt meant to be. it was meant to satisfy his needs at a reasonable price. this computer will last him for a good 2-3 years before he'll probably consider upgrading again. this 20" widescreen is nasty too btw and the coolermaster case is pretty convenient i might get one myself with the clear pannel.

Yea. Man i've been reading up on that K9N Plat and it's frankly a pretty damn good motherboard acctualy. If I had gone Nvidia I think I might have considered this mobo but I went ATI (cause my dad is an ATI guy and we got a 1950 XTX that fell of a truck somewhere... Costed us 200$) we bought the P5W DH from ASUS so It,s all good cause I like using the remote to switch sogns and stuff while Im sitting at my couch. Good for you if the PC is a very good upgrade and I hope it fulfills his needs for years to come :P Of course till you upgrade again Lol.
