Anyone know of a software based firewall that is better than Zone Alarm? Free/Paid, doesn't matter.

With a hardware FW, you don't get to see what is and isn't trying to make an outbound connection. Our router pretty much blocks everything, but I still like to limit what can and can't connect on my computer.

I'll check out Kaspersky's FW

Hmmmm.... I've only found the Kaspersky Internet Security package, is that the only one that contains the Kaspersky FW?

I use look'n stop. it is pretty lightweight and strong. configuration needs some networking knowledge though. it is not easy as much as zone alarm.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I've stayed out of the software firewalls for a bit, but back in the day it always seemed like ZoneAlarm was the winner.

I contacted ZA support, but those stupid f*cks don't even have a support e-mail. DIE YOU WORTHLESS COMPANY, DIE

i use comodo firewall. it beats all software firewalls, plus it is free for all the great features zone alarm has.

Technically software firewalls aren't; their real names are Intrusion Detection Systems, or IDS, because they only recognize an intrusion once it's already on your computer where as a firewall blocks it altogether from getting on your system. But since consumers aren't that bright they just market them as firewalls and leave it at that.

"Though they both relate to network security, an IDS differs from a firewall in that a firewall looks outwardly for intrusions in order to stop them from happening. Firewalls limit access between networks to prevent intrusion and do not signal an attack from inside the network. An IDS evaluates a suspected intrusion once it has taken place and signals an alarm. An IDS also watches for attacks that originate from within a system."
