Just curious. The majority of mine are WD, only a few maxtors from hand-me-downs and not for serious storage. By m current system specs, my 4 hd's after formatting have 1.49 TB of space; other comp has around 800GB of storage so I gotta sh*tton of drives and none in 4 years have failed me yet (keeping fingers crossed).

I have built and fixed ALOT of computers. Some people say that the brand doesn't have any effect on quality/failure rates, my reply: They are full of sh*t.



Out of all the brands, Maxtor and Seagate are on my top list for defective drives. If I get a defective computer drive it's more often than not a Seagate or Maxtor.


Western Digital is near the top along with the likes of Samsung and Hitachi for most reliable drives. A tossup for the most part.

Can't judge a brand by its DOA rate because you really have no idea what happened to them before you got your hands on them. Judging by performance it's to close to call. [on 7200 drives obv.]

WD and SG both have strong points and innovations the other doesn't have, but TBH it's neck-n-neck.

Samsung and Hitachi = Less-popular but surprisingly good alternatives, around here stores carry these rather than WD/SG.

Seeing as how alot of the machines I service were either built or upgraded by me. Also taking owners into the equation of how they take care of their stuff, yes I can judge the failure rates of harddrives.

I'd have to agree with Scroll, WD is the best brand IMHO. For years now I've been using all brands and the ones that always seem to last are my WD, and their new "Green" drives are amazing power wise.

I'm also glad to see Hitachi turn the Deathstar brand back into the Desktar. Between them and Samsung they are a close second.

All but one of my Maxtor drives has failed after 2 years.

I haven't used a Seagate drive from back in the scuzzy days so I'm not at liberty to speak for them

I can also say that Fujitsu makes the best Ultra Scuzzy disks, from the performance of our work servers ;)

What I meant was, for example, the new egg reviews that say "I ordered this drive and when i got it it didn't work I'M NEVER BUYING X Brand EVER AGAIN THEY SUCK"

Obviously not to that degree but we've all read something similar to that, failure rate yea you can judge, DOA rate.....is a mystery.

And when I said "before you got your hands on them" I meant ordering a brand new drive, not servicing one.

Just depends on how lucky you get. I have a 20GB Maxtor from 1998 that still works. I've also had 3 WD Drives fail in under 2 years. No problems with Seagate so far.

+fucking 1, my first Seagate was my last because after less than a month of ownership, it one day decided not to boot into Windows. Fuck Seagate. Western Digital for life.

I have a Seagate internal that I've used for 4 years, no issues at all.
I have a WD external that I've had for 2 years and it's awesome.

on my old computers, i've had 2 Maxtors die within a year of use. and 1 defective right out of the box lol.

Just purchased another WD 750gb Black. I have 2 of them now and am VERY happy. Then again I have seen all brands of HDD have issues.

I generally stick with WD though.

I want a new HDD, and i know the pirces are low, I'm just concerned with installing a hunk of spinning sh*t in my pc.

If you want a new hard drive cheap but don't want to sacrifice quality, it's simple.

TBH, from the link above the 640gb is the best bang for your buck. I just bought two a month ago and they're f*ckin beast. You get the most money per gb and a very reliable brand.

yea not bad. You guys seem to lean WD, and like I said, My external is awesome. Might have to try it out when I get PIZZAID! Or not, but at least I have something to think about.

My most recent drive is a Cavalry external that I got for cheap and its been great so far.

other 3 are WD's and have never had a problem with them
