Task: Build a PC for a friend who wanted a fast music production computer (not for gaming) for under $400:

AMD Phenom 9600 2.3 GHz Quad Core CPU
AsRock A780FullDisplayPort 780G 2600 H/T FSB Motherboard with ATI Radeon HD 3200
OCZ 4 GB DDRII 800 Mhz RAM Memory
Samsung 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 16MB Cache Hard Drive
Lite-On 20X DVD+-RW
Rosewill Case with 400Watt PSU

Subtotal: $361.94
Tax: $0.00
Shipping and Handling: $12.02
Total Amount: $373.96

Lemme know if that's a good build for the price.

Warning Warning Warning Warning!!!!! That 9600 does not have the TLB error that was fixed, get a Phenom 9x50 series, anything with a 50 at the end has this crucial error fixed.

Any reason why you chose that AsRock board?

Depends, if he doesnt need the expansion of it, a mATX board is more than sufficient. Another thing to keep in mind is if the audio programs he is going to be using fully utilize the 4 cores of the AMD chip?

If it's not very multithreaded capable or not fully utilize the 4 cores a same price core2duo can and will wipe the floor with the AMD chip.

Well the sound card is already an expensive $500 production card pulled from the original machine that's being replcaed, so that's not part of the package.

And yes the production tools is multithreading and uses all four cores.

As for why I bought the AsRock, it's the cheapest phenom supporting MB with 2600 FSB and FIREWIRE. All the cheaper MB's didn't have firewire ports.

And why I didn't choose a 1 TB hard drive is because it would push the total cost past $400 because I have to reship the completed build to my friend and FedEx is like $17.

Yeah, I know about the so-called TLB error with 9600. But I have a 9500 and never experienced a bottleneck or that error, so I'm not shelling out the extra $30 for the next available phenom chip (9750) on newegg.

Thanks for all yall's input.

It still fails for using a cheap case/power supply bundle

Case/Power Supply Bundle > All Use that one for all my lowend/office builds.

Since I get it for 30$ a pop it's alot better than the lowend garbage you get off newegg :D

If you like slitting your wrists on unrounded sheet metal by all means buy those cases. Or if you want to lose your entire system to a power supply overvolting the components when it dies go right ahead. I've learned my mistake, I'd rather have longevity and not have to see their computer for awhile than have return trips for fixing.

Actually Rosewill has really good customer service and RMA. And the case is REALLY sleek and sexy. It just arrived yesterday and man is it slick. It's ultra glossy -- looks almost like an apple but pure glossy onyx black.
