Ati still wins the high end market for price/performance and power usage, heat, etc. However, overlooking the retarded power consumption and excessive heat of the 480, it is a fairly powerful card. While not worth $500, the 480 isn't as bad as some leaked info lead people to believe. If the 480 had comprable heat and power consumption to the high end 5xxx series, it could be a real competetor. The performance numbers are there, but the performance is not worth the heat and power, not to mention the $500 asking price.

yeah I think that's how a lot of people feel, even more-so with the 470 because it's pretty much a 5850 with an extra 100watts of power tacked on, which makes people on even a half-decent budget cry.

LOL wow... the temp section on the guru site had temps from 50C to 94C... lmao.. I dont break 54 on either 5870 on the most demanding games. Any mah god the power consumption is retarded. Thank you shadow for your advice on the Ati cards... im sooooo damn glad I bought them. :)

Yep, going to be ordering 2 XFX HD 5870's as soon as they come back in stock @ newegg.

480 is slightly faster, but definitely not worth the extra price, heat, and power.

I really liked how xfx packaged the 5870's very protected. I love mine :)

If you buy the XFX ones, flash them to the Asus bios to raise the core/memory limits. xfx locks core and memory at 900/1300, the Asus bios is 1400/1800, iirc. I need to flash my xfx 5870 with a custom bios i made (to fix 2d clock issues with dual monitors). I'll make a post about it when I get around to it (in a week or so).

The reason I'm getting XFX is that they are pretty much the only ATI company with a lifetime warranty. Not going to be flashing any BIOSes.

Something I noticed is that with one 5870 it ran perfect on 900/1300, however with both 5870's on 900/1300 i got hang ups and crashes about every 20 minutes. At stock settings there is uber power for anything, no need to OC much in my opinion..

We have heard and confirmed from multiple independent sources that XFX won’t have Fermi cards at launch.

Nvidia is punishing this highly successful brand by cutting them off from Geforce GTX 480 and 470 launch cards, and this is a direct result of XFX's last year's decision to to start selling ATI. Since Nvidia’s sales department doesn't know any better, this is the action the green company decided to take.

Nvidia refuses to see that this might be a bad thing for the whole company as XFX has a very loyal fan base who will probably start standing up for themselves when they realize they won’t get a decent launch quantity of these cards.

In the meantime, XFX’s answer to Nvidia’s cut-out deal is bringing the fastest ever Radeon HD 5970 X2 cards with super specs, and we will try to get as many details as we can.

I'm gonna upgrade my cpu. Waiting until next year when the 5 series is in my price range and I actually need dx11 to play a game I want.

oh and I wish nvidia would stop failing, no competition is not good.

damn shame that you're in the 10% that couldn't unlike their 550's, but with the price of the 955's being so cheap now I don't think it makes much of a difference, back when you first bought it they were 250ish, can find them for about 150 now so I guess no reason not to.

new 6 core AMD's are supposed to come out soon (like a couple weeks for about 300 for the top-end ones) but upto you.

I just picked up the EVGA 015-P3-1482-AR GeForce GTX 480 (Fermi) SuperClocked 1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16. So far Loving it. Maxed out options 1280 * 1024 res getting 299 FPS in office. I am usually a AMD ATI guy but decided to build a new rig and its intel Nvidia. well see how it pans out.
