at ncsu, i get lan for internet, but at home for the summers, i get cable. but my parents want to cancle earthlink and get dsl to save 20 bucks a month. is dsl just as fast as cable? i dont care about earthilnk, i use yahoo, but for games i dont want to be the kid with the high ping. i always got 30 pings at home, and 5-20 at ncsu, is dsl any different than cable, bc it does use a phone line?

DSL is far slower then Cable, DSL is usually around 1.5 MB Downlink with usually .35 MB Upload... Cable is double or more...

Never had a problem with cable. It's been great. Friends have had DSL and noticed speed drops when I was over. One of my friend's connection would totally slow down to a snails pace when someone would be talking on the line.

if phone lines located in your area is old, don't get dsl at all. if the phone lines are not good or you are too far to the transmitter, you will never get the advertised dsl speed. though i use 3Mbps dsl and I get full speed out of it. but thats not the usual case for everyone. Go with cable if you can.

I get 5 mbs with my cable access. With high speed internet, most isps offer different packages. You should tell you parents to just drop down to the next lower package with cable. That will knock the price down a little but it would still be faster than dsl. With dsl it is pretty much the same way if you pay for a better package you are going to get a little faster. Not as fast as cable but sufficient.

I'd say stick with Cable if possible. DSL is nice, a lot better than 56K, but not as good that Cable can provide.

you know why it slowed down like crap when someone was talking on the line? because your friend was too lazy to put in the special line dividers on his phone jack, which comes when you order DSL.. and i dont know, i have DSL and i like it... but whatever... since everyone says cable is better... just go with that...
