Well as far as Opeth goes, I hope you didn't listen to the Damnation CD which isn't even metal really. If you thought they were slow, try something like this instead. Their first four albums are their best imo.

If you like At the Gates you should give the rest of the Gothenburg scene a try too, like Dark Tranquillity, In Flames (old stuff), Arch Enemy, Hypocrisy etc.
