Speeding up Firefox

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return.
Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a
time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once,
which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30.
This means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name
it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This
value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts
on information it receives. If you're using a broadband
connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

Firefox Tuning - MozillaZine Forums
mozdev.org preferential: preferences
Darrel Norton's Blog: Speeding up Firefox
Tweakfactor: Firefox Tweak Guide
Hope you find some of these informative, But some of it may be out of date, I would Recommand an extension such as "FasterFox" which changes some of your settings the same way, but instead of changing it one by one, its Button based.

EDIT: Wow, I just did what you suggested above Blood, and I noticed quite an increase. I'll check out the link you put up too Shadow, but I'll probably wait and do that in the morning.

Or, you could get FireFox, a browser that is already considerably fast because it isn't bloated, but contains extra security features, and that also supports skins and extensions, such as the one above, that make it even better.
i dont get you on that one...

Seriously though i tried it and nothing changed for me
Poopie edit: hadn't restarted FF, after restart it does seem faster and kinda jerky on load...but faster yes.
I guess I'm an insufferable n00b for not knowing that I could tweak FF for better performance. shame on me

Hooah!Or you could just use Opera instead.
Bloated? It takes more memory for fewer features by default. Most extensions end up making it more like Opera, and Opera has java extensions also. :DOr, you could get FireFox, a browser that is already considerably fast because it isn't bloated, but contains extra security features, and that also supports skins and extensions, such as the one above, that make it even better.
I've been using opera pretty much forever. It's just sooo fast. I'm still not sure why people say opera is bloated when I can be on 2 IRC channels, have email open and various webpages open and still use less memory than firefox that's just opened. Oh well, as long as it's not IE it isn't too bad. Opera's biggest downfall is its small following. Sometimes webpages manage to find things that don't work in Opera and nobody looks for them..

Yeah, I have a FireFox window open with eight tabs active. 115mb used.
By comparison, Internet Explorer 6 with eight windows open takes up around 60mb.
Do I care? No. I have 1GB of memory. It really doesn't affect me.
But it sometimes does start up slow, which is why a got this. It preloads FF into Windows like Internet Explorer so it starts up quicker.

I'm pretty pissed with firefox cuz it crashed today and I'm not smart enough to fix it. Every time i try to use it it says "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." So if you could help me that woulg be great thanks.
well restarting teh system will do it, but that's a pain if it happens often.
just get into task manager (ctrl alt del) and under the processes tab you will see firefox.exe right click on it and click end process. It might com eup with a program not responding window, if so, click end now.
Then I would go to mozilla and update the program
