Rage of Mages was the previous best to date for me. Outdated, yes, but it incorporated everything but the building aspects of Warcraft 3 as far as hero and party control are concerned.

Try out a good SNES emulator. Currently I'm making my way threw Final Fantasy IV again. My second favorite one in the series. With VI in first.
If you want a good Final Fantasy game with a job based system, go with Final Fantasy V, that's the one they really got the job system right on. Not to mention a better story in my opinion compared to Final Fantasy III, which has the same drawn out "warriors of light" theme the first 3 Final Fantasy games had.
I suggest SNESX for an emulator.

Also, check out the Kingdom Hearts games for the PS2. Spectacular.

I remember Rage of Mages, that game was really good. And yes, KOTOR is THE best party based RPG ever.Eh. This reply is late, but KOTOR is about the best party based RPG I've come across.

WoW?... Yeah, you might reread my original post. =P
I've done the Final Fantasy games to death I'm afraid. I was *going* to fire up VI but man I've played through it so many times I just couldn't get into it, and stopped playing shortly after getting started. Kefka is still the most bad ass Final Fantasy villain ever though. Countless have tried to destroy the world and enslave humanity, but Kefka is the only one to ever actually pull it off.
And I know it's blasphemy to a lot of people, but.... I just didn't think KOTOR was that good. -hides-
Guess I'm just gonna have to give up on this little idea. Everything that's out I've played, lol. If all else fails I'll just go into server one and spank some nubs 'til I feel better.

lol I guess it all depends. If you're a big fan of the Star Wars universe like me all other games fade in comparison to KotOR.
If you have no interest in Star Wars you'll probably think it's just an OK game.

Yeah and I guess that is the root of the problem really. I've never been too super into Star Wars, or anything sci-fi for that matter.
Edit: Still though I thought it was a LOT better than most sci-fi that I've played. If it had been a medieval theme or something like that it'd probably be on of my favorite games today. ^_^
