So on this shiny new computer...Bf2 puurrs. 1280x1024 all high settings.

And the new wired-straight-to-cable-modem connection is nice.

Except my ping in BF2 spikes like crazy. One minute it's around 20 or 30. Then two seconds later I'm stuttering all over the place and the ping is around 800. Then is goes back and fourth between the two extremes until I'm eventually lost from the server.

Any suggestions? :19:

"Cable"

Cable can be very jumpy sometimes, if you've always had cable and this is a new problem, check your wiring. If you personally routed the cord threw your house make sure its not coiled around a giant magnet or anything. Remember that cable is almost like sharing the internet with the whole neighborhood, I remember my old ISP at 6 AM when everyone got home from work it was slower than pond water. Now I just have my own personal 25 down thought :)

Hey, I just checked and the cable does run under a few magnetic vents...the source of the problem?

Of course, the towel head who put in my old cable setup had wood and sh*t layed over it, I noticed slow speeds, took the wood off and it's up to the right speed, probably just some voodoo but hell, do you want a woody sitting on top of you?

Anyone else on the network during this time? Do you have a firewall? Do you have VOIP?

Well actually I was more stable with the wireless on BF2. Maybe it's because that my NIC isn't PCI, but integrated. The processor is doing so much processing for BF2 it doesn't have time to do NIC calculations, hence my problem.

That nic is most likley PCI or PCI-e, its just integrated into the motherboard and run through either bus instead of on a card. The NIC takes up so little CPU time these days that its hardly a factor. Source(and other games) also take up alot of cpu time like BF2, and you dont get ping spikes.

Alright, so Stoned, wyte, and a few others were in a Bf2 server today. I joined and the lag was unberable.

So I did a tracert of the server:

Find an IP thats on your ISPs backbone and open up a continuous ping while ingame and check your latency. (ping speedtest.xxxxx.rr.com -t) You should get very good times to your ISP, if you don't call them.

If your cable provider has their shit straight it shouldn't matter if your whole neighborhood is downloading porn all at the same time. The saying that cable is like "your whole neighborhood sharing a connection" is a retarded one. The whole Internet is "shared" anyways..........

In CMD it says "Ping request could not find host speedtest.neo.rr.com. Please check the name and try again.

Anyway I found the closest populated server to me (206.222.26.232:16567) which is in columbus. The lag I experienced was bleh...not completely unbarable but still noticable to the point where my ping would jump from 37 to 160 to 700 and back. The tracert shows different results though...
