I have no experience with laptops at all but I'm sure there are people in here with some. Looking for something cheap in the 800-1100 price range that will be reliable. My girlfriend won't be doing anything more than web browsing, word processing, listening to music, and possible watching a dvd here and there, so nothing overly beefy is needed. I've read a few good things about the Dell Inspiron E1505's but any experiences/recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I would go with the cheaper xps; my dad has one with a c2d, 2 gig ram, and its pretty fast. But it seems like ze woman doesn't need a powerhouse, so get a good inspiron. My friend has an Inspiron, and it is pretty nice.

My girlfriend bought a toshiba with core 2 duo, 1gb ram, vista premium for about $700 @ future shop / best buy.

Ze woman might be more concerned about the size and weight of the machine, more than it's specs.

The inspiron 1505 can be really good or really bad. If you get a bad one, you are likely to have more than one problem with it. I would definately buy an extended on-site warranty with it if you get that.

I bought an acer notebook and I am loving it. I have had no problems with it. I use it in my care so it gets banged around a pretty good bit. Still no problems.

I would check out THIS GUY.

I bought my acer laptop from him and he generally has really good prices. I don't think he uses reserves either. I got my laptop for $529 when it retailed for over $1000.

Because he sales laptops new in the box you are usually able to purchase extended warranties also.

All I have to say is only use dell as your last resort.

EDIT: If you purchase from the seller above, ask him if it is possible to purchase extended warranties through the manufacturer. He seems to be using squaretrade now too.

If you decide to go with the inspiron 1505, just make sure you get an onsite warranty. Even if it is only for a year.

TRY TO FIND A LAPTOP THAT SHIPS WITH XP

I cannot stress enough that you MUST GET A LAPTOP THAT SHIPS WITH XP

If you insist on Vista, then you need a fast Core 2 with 2 gigs of ram, but you'll still f*ckin hate it, and you'll get sh*tty battery life, because Vista, my friend, is a crock of horse sh*t/semen/fat lady mung.

Seriously.

Don't buy it if it ships with Vista.

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m (old enough that it was part of the battery recalls), and it's completely turned me off from Dell. I'd say avoiding it if possible. The harddrive died within a year, the A/C adapter flat out stopped working (which after sitting on the phone with customer service for three hours I learned I could purchase a new one for 70$ USD).

But, from what I've heard, their newer ones are less troublesome. Macs aren't worth it unless she already has experience using them, or is technological enough to make the swap.

I think you should do a dual boot of Ubuntu and XP on Toshiba hardware.
