Ok so a while back I made a topic about which of the fans on my computer was making a really weird noise-a dying noise. Well I ruled out the CPU fan, graphics card fan, and now the case fan. I start up my PC today and the CHIP fan (the fan on the mobo) isn't going. I go into the comp setup and hardware temp monitor and it doesn't go. Then, 5 minutes later, it starts up and goes crazy, over 5000rpm, then goes to about 3000, then fluctuates wildly between 2000 and 5000. What is going on??
CHIP fan might be dying?

I don't know your motherboard but I'm sure it's some kind of heatsink/fan combo. I can run my Chipset Fan on 0 RPM's and temperatures never get near dangerous, as long as you have good air flow it shouldn't be a problem. Check the connection on the 3pin fan lead as well....if it comes down to it just get a 3rd party HSF from FrozenCPU or something.

I Actually had a similar problem to this before, see, now that you explained it a little better I think I have an idea why... Go into your setup and look for Q-Fan Control or whatever... it's made as a power saving feature in most asus boards and whatnot, all in all, When It was enabled with my watercooling setup, I found that it would disable any fan that wasn't attached to the watercooling because my CPU was cool.
Hopefully thats the issue.

Yeah disable Q-Fan in the bios. And if you have to replace it, get a nice passive cooler. Those tiny fans are annoying anyway and if you arent overclocking and have halfway decent airflow in your case you can get away with it.
EDIT: They are like $20 too
