Well I know just enough to get me into trouble when it come to overclocking, and today I was high and decied to give it a try.
I have an old AMD 64 +3000 that ran at 1.81 after I changed some stuff in the bios I got it to run at 2.24. Now my question is is that a decent jump for that modle?
CPU question

what socket is it? (939 or 754, I'd guess) Also what cooling and what mobo? Overall I'd guess it's about average. Good steppings will get 2.5+ (some close to 3 with decent cooling)

939, and a nvidia nforce 3 ultra mobo. all I got for cooling is the 5 fans on the tower and the small one on the cpu.
Temp. wise right now its running at 31c.

Thats a good start 1.8 is lacking power,, when those chips hit 2.6-3.0 they shine. So read up see how far you can get with decent memory you should be albe to get 2.5. Make sure you turn down the htt so it stays the same and raise the fsb!!!When you raise the fsb the htt goes up too so make sure you set that lower as you raise the fsb!!!

Hey Funk,
I have a DC AMD Opteron 185 Denmark 2.6GHz 939 that got about one month use in my old system before I built the new one. I was going to use my old system for storage which I can do fine with the AMD 4000 it came with. It's the best and last processor on the market for the 939. If you're interested in upgrading, let me know. Or anyone else for that matter.

My old opteron 165 1.8ghz used to run 2.8ghz on stock volts rock solid stable. That is with watercooling and really good memory. A 3000+ will average around 2.4 to 2.6 with average cooling. There used to be a sweet overclocking guide somewhere on the [H] or anandtech, but I cant find it.

well I got it up to 2.4, but the temp is to high for me. I'm just gonna order a better fan and rock this at 2.5 till I build my new one in about a month.
But thanks for the help guys.
