Eh, I got bored so I built a phase change unit. It isn't tuned yet, but I'm at 4GHz on an E6600 at around 9C at 100% load (core temp, CPU temp is at 2C) in an 86F room. :D As you can see I spent a ton of time on the enclosure. Didn't even bother taking the barcode sticker off.. After tuning I expect negative temps from this compressor. It's really nice living someplace where I don't pay power.

And you can see the desk is a work in progress. (half isn't even painted yet and all that is probably being covered in whiteboard material like the top)

and one without even reasonable insulation (neoprene + duct tape :( ) you can even see one of my schraders is frosted over. Oops :D

and frost before insulation (+compressor turned off to avoid liquid floodback into compressor. Thought I might beat out my accumulator)

 it's looking good but, i wouldn't trust putting it on wood though. May catch on fire, but that my opinion.

it's like 100F inside the box (not even close to fire). I could technically put it in anything. I'm just lazy. :D If my next revision works well, I may either put it inside my stacker entirely (there's room. that case is huge) or make a steel/aluminum enclosure. We'll see. I also have a 640x400 LCD lying around I should probably put to use somewhere on it.

hehe...man I remember when shadow posted that bad ass cooling system he first used before he upgraded...
I think I remember him saying sh*t like the processor would shut down because of the negative temps..

anyway..sweet ive wanted to always do that but never really had the cash to.

how-to is kind of annoying. You technically need licenses to work with the refridgerants (some shops will still sell them to you, but they're not supposed to). Other than that, it's just brazing the crap together in order.

Now that the room is <80 degrees (finally!) it's sub-zero. I really do need to tune the damn thing, though. Requires venting/reclaiming all the refridgerent, cutting it apart, re-brazing part, and then re-charging it. Also my computer would be off for a day. We'll see when that happens.

I had actually considered buying shadows a while ago. Ended up not and then found out my roommate's dad has an HVAC license and access to tools (making the cost of building it <200 instead of >600)

thermaltake is about as low as you can go in watercooling quality-wise. I don't see a huge reason to watercool presently. There are some f*cking amazing air coolers out there with so many heatpipes I run out of fingers and toes. :D Personally I'd recommend a thermalright ultra-120 extreme if you take that route. For watercooling, read as many forums as you can. People are generally knowledgable (I might recommend extremeoverclocking.com and xtremesystems.org). ALso I know a few of the guys around here have WC setups still. Might want to try them. :D I personally haven't kept up 100% for the last year or so.
