Hitachi has created 30 and 50 nm heads to hard drives. And basically say by the time the technology is perfected around 2009-2011 that capacity limits to four terabytes (TB) on a desktop hard drive and one TB on a notebook hard drive.
Damn a 4 terabyte hard drive sounds sexy.

Hopefully by 2009-2011, I'll have a good reason to actually get one.

IMO by that time solid state drives will be mainstream and spinny platters will be a thing of the past.
ZERO noise, hardly any heat and a ton faster. I'll take one. Good ones are already out in the $300-400 range. Expect them to blow up the spot in Q1 '08

I remember posting a topic about something similar to this toshiba developed about 6months-1year ago. Its pretty sweet b/c the perpendicular recording allows them to fit 8x more storage in the same amount of space. pretty sweet technology.

I gotta go with Schlonky on this one, Solid State is where it is at right now.
In 2009 when my work upgrades everyone's computers again, they'll be going solid state, so that is win for me!

They'll be more mainstream but I doubt they'll be blowing up the spot in 5months. Considering a SSD harddrive at 64GB right now runs around $1500-2000, I highly doubt it will catch on that quickly...Expect them to blow up the spot in Q1 '08
However, it definitely will see some awesome applications in notebooks, phones, media players and such within the next year.

Don't get me wrong SSD are going to be a must for gaming. But you're just not going to get a decent storage size for your dollar amount.
Hitachi never claimed anything about speed with the drives, just capacity. And that's what most people want when they buy a 4 terabyte drive not speed. Most likely that 4 terabyte drive isn't going to be used for gaming. Just storage of photos, music, movies and of course porn.

i really dont care about the noise and heat and stuff, bring on the bigger hard drives. and if they are made with 30nm and 50nm shouldnt they be quieter?
