i agree widgets is a stupid reason. However I bought my first Mac because I wanted something new.

please find me a machine that is the same specs for a decent price. I dont mind paying a slight premium for osX, but the hardware of my machine it not overpriced.

A few of their machine are a bit much. The 20" iMac is a bit much. the 24" isnt nearly as bad because of the screen.

The Macbook is a GREAT deal, as is the Air compared to other small laptops.

PS - as for osX being better? I dont really believe that. Somethings it can handle better, others it cant. Having it handle 32gb memory is nice. However it is quite a memory hog. osX can be as simple as anything out there, but it can also be as complex as anything else. It depends what you want to do with it.

ill give you laptops, they are not bad for what they are, 2.4, 160gb hdd, bluetooth, 2gb mem, dvd burner, and all that fancy sh*t, and quite small for like 1300$ But paying that much for a mac pro is insane. I think ill build you a similar computer(PC) for less than that and post it later.... Do you have the 8 core sh*t, give me a brief of you computer?

you will be able to build a nice computer, but you wont build something similar. thats my point. I would say it would be damn hard to build a comparable computer for less. Then again the Mac Pro isnt designed to be used by consumers. Its quite overkill for what i use it for.

Thats the difference, try to make a machine that is comparable to the MP.

The problem with their line up is that there is no mid machine. Its either an all in 1 iMac or the overpowered Mac Pro.

one thing i did look forward to when buying this was the high resale value they hold. My 3 year old iBook G4 still sells for 65% of what I paid for it.

Comparing that to what you listed for the specs, is less, and would still be less if you threw in a wi-fi card. Plus with this setup you're getting more RAM.

So adding ~310$ to your above listing brings it to around 2650$. Throw in mobo, wifi, BT, Sound Card, Keyboard (not mouse, who uses that crap), heatsinks if you want to replace stock, any software and you are already over the cost.

Like I said. You can make a good machine for less, can you make something comparable? no not really.

I still enjoy building my own machines. It just got to a point that I wanted something a bit more powerful without having to deal with any of the tweaks associated with building your own machine. Remember that stupid issue you had with your latest machine? I just didnt want to deal with that anymore. I have built my own comps for the last 10+ years. There are always those annoying as sh*t issues.

Just think how in a year I will be able to turn around and sell my machine for 2.5k.

Edit: One cool thing I find with this machine is that while beating on it the CPU temps (both A and B) never go above 28 degrees celsius.

ECC ram? What the fuck dude thats server memory, not to mention its 10-20% slower then even the cheapest non-ECC generic.

oh and not to mention lack of matching sticks = No dual channel. 2x1gb or 2x2gb and so on, never 2x 1gb w/ 1x 2gb.

That issue was more like stupidity on my part but yeah, building you own PC is the best because you have the most control with what you do.

I don't own a mac but I know many people who do. I love my laptop but I guess people who are into art, music and stuff like that often use macs because they are good for that. PC games = fail on mac though.

Responding to your earlier post zek, yea I know there are plenty of bullsh*t companies, i just want some one to do something new. Maybe this is asking too much, since i know NOTHING about computers, well, i know how to use google, and thats about it.

Yep ECC memory is a bit slower, it is also more reliable. The MP is not a normal consumer PC.

I think the price can be justified by the hardware, we have now seen that. The question is of personal opinion whether it is smart to spend that much on a PC. Its funny because yall look at me and think its crazy, while I still look at other MP users who have raided 4TB HDD and 16+gb of memory and think they are crazy.

Back on topic. I think that biggest thing drawing this crowd away from buying Mac desktops is the lack of customization for a reasonable price. Their line up has a hole where most other higher end consumer desktops go. Mac Mini = small and cheap. Next is the iMac which is a nice all in one for family and everyday use. There is no normal desktop that can be upgraded etc... If you want that option then you much drop the big money for the MP.

Build a computer. Get the right hardware and install 3 OSes; Windows, Mac and linux on it. Recommend multiple hard drives for testing. Read this and try it out. http://www.osx86project.org/
